Vikindu Forest Reserve

The Vikindu Forest Reserve (Hifadhi ya Msitu wa Vikindu, In Swahili) is a protected area located within Mkuranga District in Tanzania’s Pwani region, encompassing 17.1 square kilometers ((6.6 sq mi). Vikindu Forest Reserve is situated on a plain between 40 and 80 meters above sea level, about 15 kilometers inland from the Indian Ocean and approximately 17 kilometers south of Dar es Salaam on the main road leading to Kilwa. The main tarmacked road from Dar es Salaam to Kilwa runs along the eastern edge of the forest reserve, you will find the village of Vikindu, which is situated along this major roadway.

Vikindu Forest Reserve has officially been reclassified and is no longer designated as a forest reserve. Initially surveyed during the British colonial era, it was established to protect virgin forests. Currently, the oversight of the area falls under the Tanzania Forest Services, a division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. The management of Vikindu Forest Reserve is the responsibility of the Mkuranga District Forest Conservator, who reports directly to the Zonal Commander, who in turn is accountable to the Conservation Commissioner for Tanzania Forest Services.

Vikindu Forest Reserve boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna, featuring notable plant species such as Afzelia, Julbenadia, Brachestigia, Adansonia digitata, and Combretum. Wildlife includes Dik-dik, black butterflies, white colobus monkeys, Antelopes, wild pig’s python, various butterflies, and beetles, making it a vibrant ecosystem for nature enthusiasts.

The reserve is also home to Palm-nut Vulture, African Goshawk, Bateleur, Crowned Eagle, Crested Francolin, Kenya Crested Guineafowl, Livingstone’s Turaco, Yellowbill, African Wood Owl, Little Swift, Palm Swift, White-throated Bee-eater, African Pitta, Little Greenbul, Yellow-bellied Greenbul,  Fischer’s Greenbul, BrownbuJ, Eastern Bearded Scrub Robin, Red-capped Robin-Chat, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Crested Flycatcher, a Black-backed Puffback, Tropical Boubou, Black-breasted Glossy Starling, Olive Sunbird and Cordon-bleu among others

Forest Walk

Vikindu Forest Reserve boasts some of the finest nature trails for walking. Canoeing at Milaweni Dam

Milaweni Dam is a natural dam that has been there for years. Its water is quite different from some other places such as Pugu and Magoroto. This was yet another beautiful experience at the reserve. While on your canoeing tour, you will have able to appreciate the tranquil colour of the waters in the dam and the beautiful plants. While in the dam, you get to see some small fish swimming away. Vikindu Forest Reserve offers camping facilities for visitors, providing rental tents and designated camping areas. There are two camping sites such as Mkangazi Camping Site and Bwawani Camping Site, along with one resting Banda, creating a comfortable setting for those looking to immerse themselves in nature.

Getting to Vikindu Forest Reserve  

Vikindu Forest Reserve is located in the Mkuranga District off the Coat Region, nestled between Vikindu village-after which is named, and the Kipara Mpakani village. The drive from Dar Es Salaam typically takes up to 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

To reach the reserve, take Nelson Mandela Road, then transition onto Kilwa Road. The route is accessible enough that even smaller vehicles are suitable for a delightful weekend trip to this natural escape.
