What Month Is The Serengeti Migration : The Serengeti migration is an annual event and takes a circular movement. During the migration, more than 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by gazelles, and zebras move in search of greener pasture and water. This annual event is better described as one of the world’s most remarkable spectacles.
The wildebeest begin their journey from the Southern side of Serengeti to Ndutu in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). The great migration allows you encounter one of the world’s biggest herds of special mammals such as wildebeest while in the natural habitat.
Before embarking on a trip to Serengeti National Park to observe the Great migration, take note that this annual event does vary. The determining factors include availability of water and pasture. Exceptional migration experience is best enjoyed from late June up to August/September. These are the months of the year when you can perfectly experience the best of the River crossing as the wildebeest soak themselves into the river water amidst larking crocodiles and on terrestrial area, there are also diverse predators including lions, leopards and others.
From June to October, the key areas to consider a must-visit include the Lobo, Moru Kopjes and Seronera valley. These are the unique months of the year to watch males clanging their horns while they compete for river water.
April to June
Starting late April to June, a great display of wildebeest migration can be enjoyed. Over a million wildebeest together with zebras and gazelles. Huge herds of these mammals start their journey in April or May although these come with several exceptions. Around June, herds of wildebeest migrate and visitors can choose from Grumeti or Lobo for their encounters. This is also the preferred time to visit Ngorongoro area, beaches and Lake Manyara.
July & August
From July to August, this is an amazing period to enjoy wildebeest views and other wildlife while at Serengeti Mara Camp. July and August mark the annual migration wildebeest crossing Maasai Mara as they rush to cross the river. The busiest month of the year at this park is around August. Hundreds to 1000s of wildebeest cross the Mara River and this is a must enjoy experiences.
The peak months of the year to experience the great migration in the Western corridor is from June to July and also from August to September, especially if you want to explore the Northern side of the park. It is easier spotting wildlife during these months and it is around this period when huge numbers of animals confine in the area.
September to October
Between September and October/November, wildebeest herds move southwards to Lake Ndutu. Ndutu is also a calving ground and more than 8000 calves can be born and this is when several predators flock in the area. This is a great chance to find leopards, lions, hyenas, cheetahs all busy for day.
November-December
November is when wildebeest herds begin returning to Tanzania from Masai Mara Reserve. The area features green grass during this period and there is plenty for wildlife to feed on.
