Amazing things to do at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in 2025: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area which includes the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is located in the southwestern corner of Uganda in the town of Kisoro and was gazetted in 1991. The park covers an area of about 34 square kilometers, making it the smallest national park in Uganda. The park gets its name from a Kinyarwanda word “Gahinga” referring to the small lava stones common in gardens at the foot of the mountain

Volcano hiking
Climbing a volcano is a unique experience you can enjoy at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The park has three volcanoes to choose from: Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. Each volcano hike takes a full day. Mount Gahinga is 3,474 meters tall and usually takes about 6 hours to hike up and back down. Along the way, you can see fantastic sights like bamboo forests, unique calderas, playful golden monkeys, and large lobelia plants.
Mount Muhabura, which stands at 4,127 meters, is also a popular climb. The hike is around 12 miles round trip and typically takes about 8 hours. From the top, you’ll get breathtaking views of Lake Edward, the ancient Bwindi Forest, the Virunga Mountain range, and Mount Rwenzori.
If you’re interested in climbing Mount Sabyinyo, be ready for a challenging eight-hour trek. This mountain reaches 3,669 meters in height and involves a 14-kilometer round trip. The cost to climb any of the volcanoes in the park is $80 per person. This fee includes the park entrance, but if you want a porter to carry your gear, there will be an additional charge.
